A Space for the Simply Natural
Step inside Echora, and you’re met with more than just a beautifully curated store. The space feels alive, layered with texture, calm, and intention. It is a place where everything has been chosen with care, where the natural world is both muse and guide. At the heart of it all is Donna Cooper, whose own journey of living in flow has shaped the spirit of Echora.
“Natural beauty, uncluttered spaces, authentic connections, gratitude for it all — and love as the umbrella over everything.”
“For as long as I can remember I’ve steered away from anything that didn’t feel natural or authentic,” she shares. As a self-described “sensory-sensitive Libran,” Donna has always sought balance, in her surroundings, her relationships, and the way she moves through the world. Creating Echora was never about following trends or business blueprints, but about honouring intuition.
That philosophy has found its home in the store’s mantra: simply natural. For Donna, the words themselves are like an exhale. “Natural is uncomplicated. It removes tension. We all know by now what happens when we’re out of alignment with nature, as people, as a planet. To be simply natural feels peaceful. It’s a compass for how I live, and for everything we choose at Echora.”
Echora’s offerings, from slow fashion to organic beauty, are guided by that compass. Sustainability, Donna admits, is a word that has been worn thin, but for her it remains meaningful. “When it’s used authentically, it describes exactly who we are. We want long-lasting fabrics, toxin-free products, and brands that care for people and planet.” Not every supplier makes the cut, Donna laughs about returning stock that turned out to be “natural” in name only, but that’s all part of walking the path with integrity. “It’s not perfect, but we keep moving in the right direction.”
“To be simply natural feels peaceful. It’s a compass for how I live, and for everything we choose at Echora.”
The store is also inseparable from its landscape. Nestled in South Murwillumbah, surrounded by the lush Northern Rivers, Echora feels rooted in place. “When I go to a shopping mall now, I feel flattened, it’s the artificial lights, the sensory overload, the lack of connection. Here in the Northern Rivers, it’s different. People want community. They want conscious choices. Supporting local designers and makers feels like the most natural thing in the world.” Echora now showcases work from seven local designers, each committed to thoughtful, sustainable practices, with more discovered each season.
For Donna, though, the greatest inspiration is the people who walk through her doors.
“Helping someone find that piece they’ll treasure, watching them light up and walk out with a bounce in their step — that’s why we’re here.”
“Our customers give me heart. Helping someone find that piece they’ll treasure, watching them light up and walk out with a bounce in their step, that’s why we’re here. I want every person who visits to feel seen, supported, and worthy of our full attention.”
Even the building itself carries that energy. Once a butcher’s shop for over a century, its walls now hold new stories. Old timbers from the roof were salvaged for the fit-out, layers of history were gently stripped back, and the space was blessed with love and intention before becoming Echora — a name drawn from Tolkien’s Elvish, meaning surrounded by mountains. “The bones of this place already held so much community,” Donna reflects. “We just carried that forward in a new way.”
Each morning, when she opens the door and steps into Echora’s natural light and textures, Donna feels the same thing she hopes every visitor does: that this is more than a shop. It is a nourishing space, a reminder of the beauty in living simply, naturally, and with love.
