A Studio Built on Making Together
In The Loop Studio is a welcoming new space in Murwillumbah. More than just a yarn shop, this beautifully light-filled studio is a relaxed creative space where quality fibres, contemporary textile art and inspiring workshops come together under one roof.
Founded by creative duo Lisa and Karen, In The Loop Studio was born from a shared vision to create a place where makers of all skill levels could gather, learn and be inspired. After each running their own successful
businesses, Funky Bunny Designs and Knit Happens, the pair joined forces in early 2026 when Lisa approached Karen with what she called a “Big,crazy idea.” Karen’s response was immediate: “Yes! Let’s do this!”
The result is a unique creative space built on three cornerstones: YARN, ART and WORKSHOPS.
At the heart of the studio is a carefully curated selection of premium natural yarns and fibres, including Australian wool, cotton, linen, raffia, hemp and nettle, with the range continuing to grow. Quality is central to everything they do. Lisa hand-dyes the raffia available in-store, carefully grading each bundle to ensure exceptional standards, while Karen has begun producing a collection of hand-dyed merino wool inspired by local landscapes and community icons.
Visitors will also find exclusive knitting, crochet and basketry kits and patterns designed in-house. Karen creates original garment and crochet patterns, while Lisa’s popular basketry coiling kits allow makers to create their own bowls, with a raffia handbag kit soon to follow.
In The Loop Studio is also an emerging textile and fibre art gallery. Lisa’s intricate micro-crochet
jewellery and fibre wall art are currently showcased throughout the studio, with plans to host rotating
exhibitions featuring talented textile and fibre artists from across the region and beyond.
Lisa’s artistic eye can be seen throughout the space, from the carefully styled interiors to the
imaginative window displays that stop passers-by in their tracks. Together, Lisa and Karen describe themselves as “arty” and “crafty” — a perfect combination for a yarn and fibre studio.
Workshops are a major part of the studio’s appeal, with classes in knitting, crochet and basketry designed to
inspire creativity in a relaxed and supportive environment. Small class sizes ensure participants receive
personalised guidance and leave feeling confident to continue creating at home. The studio also welcomes guest tutors and fibre artists, bringing fresh ideas and skills to the local creative community.
At the centre of the studio sits a large communal workshop table where friendships are formed as naturally as the stitches themselves. Alongside workshops, the studio hosts weekly “Crafternoons” and monthly “Social Saturdays,” inviting locals to bring along their projects, share stories and enjoy tea, conversation and creativity together.
In The Loop Studio will also feature in the upcoming LAVA Festival on 27–28 June with “At the Bottom of the Garden,” a yarnbombing installation transforming nearby Newell Park into a knitted and crocheted wonderland. Community members are invited to contribute handmade creations throughout the festival weekend.
