Men's Fashion Sorted
Some ideas are born from strategy. Others? From serendipity and stubborn belief. For Pat and Sharon, the founders of Bolt + Buckle, it was a bit of both.
Their journey began back in 2012, after a life-changing trip to India and Nepal sparked the launch of Indepal, an artisanal leather goods brand that started at Brisbane farmers markets and grew to occupy a Westfield pop-up, and later, a boutique in Brisbane Arcade. Indepal was built on a love for craftsmanship: hand-stitched leather, rich textures, and a story in every piece. It was a brand that
celebrated the slow-made and the enduring, resonating with customers who valued authenticity over fast fashion.
But the real twist came in 2021. Amid border closures, lockdowns, and a retail climate many described as “impossible,” the couple made what some called a risky move: opening a men’s store in Murwillumbah. They saw opportunity where others saw uncertainty, a gap in the market for a men’s retail space that felt both aspirational and approachable. The result? Bolt + Buckle—a destination unlike any other
This isn’t just a store. It’s a solution. Bolt + Buckle tackles two things head-on:
1. The eternal dilemma of what to buy for men.
2. The widely accepted truth that most men hate shopping.
Their answer? Curate a compelling, style-forward space that speaks to both.
Step inside and you’re greeted by an industrial-rustic aesthetic, dark ceilings, warm timber fittings, vintage-inspired lighting, and the scent of leather in the air. The playlist is deliberate, nodding to cool bars and hidden city spots. Each corner of the store feels like a discovery: from heritage-quality shirts and timeless leather belts, to thoughtful gifts, grooming gear, and conversation-starting curiosities. This isn’t about racks of clothes, it’s about moments of surprise and connection.
“People often tell us how much they love the service and the way the shop looks and feels, and honestly, it all comes down to our team. We’re lucky to have such a group of genuine, talented people making it happen every day,” says Pat, co-founder of Bolt + Buckle.
Once known for leather bags, it’s now a concept store designed for the men in your life — husbands, dads, sons, grandfathers — and the gifters searching for something meaningful. It’s stylish but unpretentious. Masculine, yet inviting. And people have noticed, Bolt + Buckle has taken out the Retail Excellence award at the 2023 and 2024 Tweed Business Awards, cementing its place as a local retail leader.
But the most treasured accolades come from customers:
“This place is like men’s Narnia!!!”
“My husband hates shopping, but he LOVES coming to Bolt + Buckle.”
Part of the magic comes from the way Pat and Sharon curate their range. They don’t just order stock from a catalogue, they travel, they connect with makers, and they handpick items they’d be proud to give or receive themselves. Quality is the non-negotiable. If it’s in the store, it’s been tried, tested, and loved. They also think about longevity, not just in how long a product lasts, but how long it will be treasured.
Bolt + Buckle has become a hub for the unexpected. Locals pop in to browse and end up staying for a chat, often leaving with a gift they didn’t plan to buy but know will be perfect. Visitors from out of town make it a stop on their itinerary after hearing about it through word-of-mouth. It’s retail as an experience, not a transaction.
And they’re not stopping here. With expansion on the horizon, new collaborations in the works, and a passionate team behind the scenes, Pat and Sharon are ready to bring Bolt + Buckle to even more communities. They believe men’s style should be celebrated, not sidelined, and that a great shopping experience can change the way someone feels about themselves.
Because men’s style deserves more than just socks and jocks and finally, there’s a place that gets it.
