Where Good Food Meets Good Vibes
Behind the scenes (and often behind the pass in the open kitchen) is owner Phil Czerwonatis, who may have a quiet presence but whose fingerprints are everywhere in this much-loved local café.
Phil’s story begins a long way from Casuarina’s coastline. After finishing his apprenticeship in Germany, he moved to Sydney in 2008 where he was introduced to Australia’s café culture, and instantly fell for it. “I was still working in fine dining at the time,” he recalls. “But once I tried working in a busy little café in Auckland, I loved the more casual vibes compared to nights. I never went back.”
By 2016, Australia was calling again. Phil moved back with the dream of opening his own café, and in 2018 that dream became Tucker. “The rest is history,” he smiles.
Of course, Tucker is about more than great coffee and plates of nourishing food, it’s about connection, sustainability and community. From day one, Phil and his team have made it a priority to source locally and support Northern Rivers producers. “We wanted to utilise what the region has to offer and use as many local and sustainable suppliers and ingredients as possible, while still running a small business,” he explains.
It’s a philosophy that flows onto the menu. Think classic Australian breakfast dishes, only done really, really well. “I wanted something that wasn’t overcomplicated but executed with quality,” Phil says. The result? A menu that feels both grounding and fresh, where every dish nourishes not just your body but your soul.
For Phil, a “good day” at Tucker starts before the doors open, setting up in the stillness of the morning, watching the sunrise over Casuarina, and later greeting regulars as they come through for their daily ritual. “By the time I reach my third almond latte after a busy lunch rush,” he laughs, “I know it’s been a perfect day.”
And then there’s the atmosphere. Tucker has become a meeting place for everyone, from mums catching up over coffee as their kids play safely in the outdoor play area, to casual business chats and weekend brunches. That welcoming vibe was no accident. “From the start, we wanted to create a space that’s inclusive to everyone. Not just serving food and coffee, but making people feel relaxed and part of something.”
It’s that mix — nourishing food, sustainable choices, and genuine connection that makes Tucker more than a café. It’s where good food and good vibes come together, every day.
