Preparing for parenthood doesn’t end when your baby arrives.
The arrival of a new baby brings enormous change. Alongside the excitement and love, there can be physical recovery, sleepless nights, feeding challenges and the emotional adjustment of finding your feet as a new family. Yet, while much of the preparation for parenthood focuses on pregnancy and birth, the weeks that follow deserve just as much attention.
It’s this often-overlooked chapter of parenthood that inspired Lydia, a midwife and mother of two, to establish Nest & Nurture, offering compassionate, practical support for families through pregnancy and the early months of life with a newborn.
With more than 14 years of midwifery experience, Lydia has supported thousands of parents from all walks of life. Through her professional experience, and her own journey into motherhood, she understands that while becoming a parent can be one of life’s most beautiful transitions, it can also be challenging.
She’s seen firsthand the pressure new parents place on themselves, the guilt that can accompany difficult days and the expectation that everything should look perfect, even when things feel anything but.
It’s a reality that inspired her to create a service where parents feel heard, understood and supported, without judgement or unrealistic expectations.
Preparing for the fourth trimester
At Nest & Nurture, support begins before the baby arrives. Postpartum planning sessions help expectant parents look beyond the birth itself and consider what life might actually look like in those first weeks at home.
From understanding physical recovery and newborn feeding to normal newborn behaviours, settling, sleep and establishing a support network, these sessions offer an opportunity to feel more informed and prepared for the transition ahead.
For families who need a little extra support after birth, Lydia also offers fourth trimester care in the days and weeks following delivery, as well as postpartum massage.
The focus is on helping parents navigate this new chapter with greater confidence, while recognising that recovery and adjustment look different for everyone.
Finding a gentler approach to newborn sleep
As a qualified sleep consultant, Lydia also provides gentle, responsive and realistic sleep support for families experiencing challenges with their little one’s sleep.
Rather than adding to the pressure parents can already feel, her approach is centred on understanding each family’s circumstances and finding practical ways forward. It’s about moving away from the guilt and overwhelm that can accompany sleep struggles and helping parents feel more confident in responding to their baby’s needs.
A village for new parents
For Lydia, Nest & Nurture is about much more than practical advice. It’s about being part of the village that supports a family through one of life’s biggest transitions.
It’s about listening without judgement, validating the hard days and reminding parents that they don’t need to have everything figured out. Sometimes, what makes the greatest difference is having someone reassure you that what you’re experiencing is normal, that you’re not alone and that it’s okay to slow down.
Lydia has also created the Nest & Nurture Midwife Postpartum Well-being Guide, a thoughtful resource designed to reach parents who might need a little reassurance and encouragement along the way.
Her message is a simple but important one: amidst the feeds, the changing nappies and the demands of caring for a new little person, remember to do something for yourself, too.
Because looking after yourself is part of looking after your family.
