What began as a local bowls club has quietly grown alongside the town. Pottsville Beach Sports Club has long been a place to enjoy a game of bowls, catch up over a meal or celebrate a special occasion. For generations of Pottsville locals, it has been part of everyday life.
Today, the club looks a little different, reflecting a town that has changed and grown around it.
General Manager Ryan Clarke believes community clubs have an important role to play beyond hospitality and entertainment.
“Community clubs have always been the heartbeat of regional Australia. Our role goes well beyond providing meals and entertainment. We create places where friendships begin, sporting careers develop, local charities are supported and families make memories together. If we continue putting our community first, everything else will look after itself.”
That thinking sits behind much of what happens at Pottsville Beach Sports Club.
A Place to Meet
While bowls remains an important part of the club’s identity, today’s Pottsville Beach Sports Club has plenty happening beyond the greens.
On any given day, you’ll find bowlers enjoying a social game, families settling in for dinner, sporting clubs celebrating after a match, community groups holding meetings and friends catching up over coffee. There are also visitors discovering the relaxed charm of Pottsville for the first time.
Functions Coordinator Trish Bruggy says creating a place where different generations can spend time together is an important part of the club’s role.
“Pottsville Sports is more than a club – it’s a meeting place for our community. Whether people come for bowls, a meal, a family celebration or a community event, they come to connect. Creating a space where different generations can come together helps build a stronger and more connected community.”
Giving Back Locally
As a not-for-profit, community-owned club, supporting local organisations has always been an important part of the club’s work.
Each year, Pottsville Beach Sports Club supports local schools, sporting clubs, charities and community organisations through sponsorships, donations, fundraising events and partnerships.
Those supported include Pottsville Beach Public School and its P&C initiatives, Pottsville Cricket Club, Pottsville Soccer Club, Kingscliff Netball Association and the Pottsville RSL Sub-Branch. The club also supports junior athletes representing the region and state, local charities through the ClubGRANTS program and a range of community organisations that use the club’s facilities.
Support isn’t limited to financial contributions. The club also provides venue space, promotional support, raffle prizes, fundraising opportunities and practical assistance where possible.
One initiative the club is particularly proud of is Purple Fridays. Each Friday, staff wear purple shirts to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and support the message of No to Domestic and Family Violence.
It’s a simple way for the club to show its support for an important cause.
“As a community club, we believe in supporting the people who support us,” Ryan says. “Strong community connections make Pottsville a better place for everyone, and we’re proud to play our part.”
The club also supports fundraising initiatives throughout the year, including the Northern Rivers Club Managers Charity Golf Day, which raises thousands of dollars for White Ribbon Australia and its work to prevent domestic and family violence.
Growing with Pottsville
Walk into the club today and there are plenty of signs of how much it has changed.
Over the past few years, the club has invested in a synthetic bowling green, refreshed dining areas, upgraded gaming facilities, modern function spaces and family-friendly outdoor areas.
Each project has been planned with the needs of a growing town in mind.
Yet while the facilities have changed, the relaxed atmosphere remains.
Visitors often comment on the friendly staff and welcoming feel of the club, with customer service continuing to be a priority for the team.
The Next Chapter
Pottsville is continuing to grow, and the club is planning for what comes next.
Its long-term vision is summed up in four words:
“Moving with our community.”
Future plans being explored include an undercover
championship bowling green capable of hosting major regional and interstate events throughout the year, expanded outdoor dining and entertainment spaces, additional family areas and flexible event facilities for community celebrations, live entertainment, sporting presentations and corporate events.
The club is also looking at ways to encourage more young people into bowls and improve the experience for members and visitors through new technology and ongoing investment.
For Ryan, the focus isn’t on becoming the biggest club on the Tweed Coast.
“We don’t want to become the biggest club on the Tweed Coast—we want to become one of the most connected. Every investment we make is designed to create more opportunities for sport, families, entertainment and community groups to come together under one roof.”
For more than four decades, Pottsville Beach Sports Club has been part of local life.
As the town changes, the club is changing with it, while holding onto the friendly atmosphere and community spirit that have been part of its story from the beginning.
Whether you’re there for barefoot bowls, dinner with the family, a fundraiser or a coffee with friends, there’s a good chance you’ll see a familiar face.
And that’s perhaps what makes Pottsville Beach Sports Club feel like home.
